Gastrointestinal Working Group

About this Working Group

The SAHF Gastrointestinal Working Group (GIWG) focusses on promoting improvements in the quality of, and access to, digestive and liver healthcare and health promotion in South Asians and other ethnic minorities. These include diseases of the: oesophagus, stomach, gallstones, liver and bowel, including conditions as varied as viral hepatitis, alcohol and other liver diseases, inflammatory bowel and coeliac disease, and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.

The SAHF GIWG has organised multiple events to assess the evidence base of ethnicity and gastrointestinal/liver diseases (in the Royal College of Physicians in 2008, World Congress of Gastroenterology in 2009 and British Society of Gastroenterology in 2010). The SAHF GIWG also works with multiple stakeholders to help promote health in ethnic minorities. These include the Department of Health, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, and relevant patient organisations.

The SAHF GIWG comprises members trained in the management of gastroenterological and liver conditions, predominantly in the Midlands, but we are always keen to hear from other interested parties.
