Professor Wasim Hanif discusses diabetes risk among South Asians in ETV interview

Professor Wasim Hanif, Chair of the South Asian Health Foundation (SAHF), has featured in an interview with ETV, one of South India’s leading television networks, discussing the factors that contribute to the increased risk of diabetes among South Asian populations.

In the interview, Professor Hanif explores the complex relationship between genetics, lifestyle and the development of type 2 diabetes, challenging the idea that diabetes risk can simply be attributed to individual lifestyle choices.

South Asian communities are at significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, often at a younger age and at lower levels of body weight than White European populations. Research and guidance from the South Asian Health Foundation have highlighted the importance of recognising these differences in prevention, early detection and treatment.

Professor Hanif also discusses why understanding the underlying risk factors is particularly important in South Asia, where the growing burden of diabetes presents a major public health challenge.
