Stroke Support Calls Offer Lifeline for Recovery - In Multiple Languages
Stroke survivors and their families can now access tailored emotional and practical support through the Stroke Association’s Weekly Volunteer Calls service.
Stroke survivors and their families can now access tailored emotional and practical support through the Stroke Association’s Weekly Volunteer Calls service.
Over the course of eight weeks, participants receive friendly calls from either a trained volunteer or someone with lived experience of stroke. Matching is based on shared interests and, where relevant, the impact of stroke—ensuring conversations are meaningful and supportive.
While language options aren’t listed online due to volunteer availability, individuals can specify their preferred language on the sign-up form, and the team does their best to match accordingly. For example, the service currently includes two Punjabi-speaking volunteers.
The Stroke Association is also welcoming new volunteers, especially those who can speak languages in addition to English. A case study on their website highlights Anita, a former Punjabi-speaking call volunteer who continues to support stroke groups.
The Stroke Association is currently exploring how to improve access to translated health information for stroke survivors and would welcome collaboration with health professionals in this space.
