SAHF-DAR Ramadan Conference 2026: A Day of Insight, Reflection and Recognition

Despite snowy conditions across the UK, delegates from across healthcare came together for the SAHF and Diabetes and Ramadan International Alliance (DAR) 9th Ramadan Conference, themed “Ramadan and Beyond Ramadan”, on Friday 9 January 2026. The strong turnout was a testament to the commitment of clinicians and community leaders dedicated to improving care for people with diabetes who fast during Ramadan and beyond.

The programme offered a rich blend of evidence, practical guidance and real-world insight, spanning updated Diabetes and Ramadan guidelines, fasting risk stratification, glucose monitoring, nutrition, exercise, and the management of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes during fasting. Sessions emphasised translating theory into practice, equipping healthcare professionals with tools to support informed, safe decision-making with their patients as the holy month approaches.

A highlight of the day was the presentation of the SAHF Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr Bachar Afandi, recognising his outstanding two-decade contribution to Diabetes and Ramadan research, clinical leadership, and international guideline development. His lecture, charting the journey from physiology to precision medicine in fasting, was both reflective and inspiring, underscoring the impact of sustained commitment to patient-centred care.

We extend our sincere thanks to our sponsors, A. Menarini, for their valued support, and to all speakers and chairs who contributed to a stimulating and practical programme. Above all, we thank our delegates who travelled and attended despite challenging weather conditions.

As Ramadan approaches, we hope the knowledge shared throughout the day will support attendees in guiding their patients to manage diabetes safely and confidently during fasting, informed by evidence, compassion and cultural understanding.
